We covered news of the updated Playstation Portable handheld console called the PSP Go being launched in India, back in December last year. There were rumours on the web over the last couple of days but those have been confirmed. Sony has decided to halt production of the console.
Going, Going, Gone…
The PSP Go was launched as a lighter, compact version of the original PSP console. It had other improvements such as a better screen. The PSP Go was launched without support for UMDs, a key feature found in older models such as the PSP 3000. In international markets, the PSP Go was priced at just a little short of the Playstation 3’s price. A short while, Sony Ericsson launched their Xperia Play phone which like the PSP has a slider design and a set of controls dedicated for gaming. This might be one of the reasons the PSP Go was being discontinued but the more obvious explanation for this move might be the high price tag. Sony will continue to provide patches and firmware updates for the console even though manufacturing will have been stopped. Sony is all set to launch their next handheld gaming console, the NGP (Next Generation Portable) sometime this year.
