Remember the massive multiplayer mod for Just Cause 2 we had reported on last month? Well, PC gamers will be able to get their hands on the mod this weekend according to an announcement on the official website of the game, JC2-MP. The mod for the game, currently in beta testing, allows an extremely large amount of players – 600, to be precise – to play the game together. Even though the Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod is still in beta, it hasn't stopped 10,000 people from registering on the mod's forum. As of writing this, the timer on the mod’s website says that there are two and a half hours before the download for the public beta will be available.
The public beta will prove how this insane game should've had multiplayer from the start!
The original Just Cause is an open world action-adventure video game created by Avalanche Software and released in 2006. It centres around the exploits of Rico Rodriguez, an operative working for the Agency, as he helps local guerrillas overthrow the tyrannical regime governing the fictional Caribbean nation of San Esperito. The player can drive nearly every vehicle under the sun, as well as climb about on them while moving at high speeds and jumping onto other nearby cars, trucks, tanks, helicopters, etc. Notable for the inclusion of a grappling hook, which allows Rico to rappel onto moving vehicles from a distance, and a parachute, which allows for all manner of aerial stunts.
In the sequel, Just Cause 2, Rico is a few years older. He has been assigned to track down his mentor and superior from the first game, who has disappeared on the fictional southeast Asian island of Panau. The island has been recently taken over by a ruthless dictator. Various improvements have been made to the gameplay, allowing for even more over-the-top shenanigans. Rico can now use his grapple to attach to any object, pull enemies off their feet, tether them to various objects, and essentially use it for all manner of physics-based stunts.
In the games, the player is free to roam the game's open world, not having to focus on the game's storyline. Progress in the game is measured with Chaos, which is earned by completing missions, destroying government property, collecting items for the factions and reaching 100 percent completion in settlements and military bases. Chaos unlocks new agency missions and stronghold takeovers. Chaos and stronghold takeovers expand the factions' area of influence, which unlocks faction missions and race challenges. Agency missions progress the story, while faction missions are completely optional. Helping one faction does not prevent the player from helping the others.
You can keep track of the multiplayer mod’s progress on their website or its twitter account @jc2mpdev.
