Last year, we saw that India had agreed to grant an Internet service license to Qualcomm. The U.S chip making company is finally set to get wireless broadband services permit in India, reports The Economic Times. The company has settled all differences with the company, says the report. Qualcomm was the only company to grab the wireless broadband airwaves (BWA) in the June 2010 auction and has paid 4,913 crore for permits across Delhi, Mumbai, Haryana and Kerala. It plans to offer high speed Internet in these regions.
Qualcomm to get permit
The tribunal has directed Qualcomm to pay 410 crore of license fee arrears on behalf of TulipTelecom, within four weeks and Qualcomm will get the required permit within seven days. TulipTelecom is one of the first joint venture partners of Qualcomm in India. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had previously disapproved an offer to provide bank guarantees to the tune of 146 crore towards Tulip's dues, says the report. Qualcomm’s permit was earlier cancelled as it did not apply for and acquire licenses within the three months of the auction. TulipTelecom supposedly has 13 percent stake in the Qualcomm's India operations.
The 2010 auction ended in June, while Qualcomm applied for permits only for as late as December 2010. Moreover, Qualcomm apparently applied for BWA permits under four different companies, while violating action guidelines as the winner can nominate just one company to get license. Qualcomm has now merged four companies into one entity for licenses and airwaves. However, their quest was on hold as Tulip had some pending dues. DoT had claimed 146 crores in November 2011 and now it claims 264 crores from Tulip.
Augere Wireless Broadband, which is a UK-based Broadband company has also announced that it would invest roughly $60 million in the next three to five years to get fourth-generation (4G) broadband services to customers in India. Talking about 4G services, Reliance also plans cheap 4G plans for India.
