Qualcomm has announced a new generation Snapdragon 805 chipset, which improves on the already-beefy Snapdragon 800 in terms of processor and GPU. The 805 is set to have a better 2.5GHz quad-core processor and support for 4K graphics, displays and video recording support. The latter was already a USP of the Snapdragon 800.
Snapdragon 805 devices will be ready for commercial release H1 of 2014 and we could see the first devices announced at CES in January or Mobile World Congress, the following month.
The most exciting part is the GPU of the new SoC. A brand new Adreno 420 GPU has been developed for the chipset, which Qualcomm says will deliver 40 percent more processing power than the last-gen Adreno 330. This should help boost gaming performance on Android and Windows Phone devices, hopefully attracting iOS-like game development to the platforms.
Snapdragon 805 SoCs to be the new benchmark?
While the 800 itself had one of the most powerful mobile CPUs in the world, the quad-core processor has been improved on the 805. The cores have a new Krait 450 architecture and have a maximum clock speed of 2.5GHz and memory bandwidth of up to 25.6GB/s. However, it must be noted that this isn’t the much-anticipated 64-bit chip you were hoping for. The Krait 450 is still a 32-bit processor.
As for integrated modules, Qualcomm has embedded a new modem called Gobi 9×35, manufactured on a 20nm process. It’s touted to be more power efficient, and also faster. It supports LTE Category 4, dual-band WiFi ac and even allows 4K video streaming via Wi-Fi, which make it ideal for use in the high-end devices of 2014.
Looking at the importance of image processing, Qualcomm has given the Snapdragon 805 a dedicated camera processor, which is said to boost camera speed significantly. It uses data from the gyro sensor to stabilize captured photos.
