Reports about a new high-end Samsung device running Windows Phone 8 were true after all. Soon after launching the flagship Galaxy S5, Samsung has pulled the wraps off its newest Windows Phone device dubbed Ativ SE. It is now available for pre-order on Verizon Wireless – $199 (approximately Rs 11,900) with a two year agreement and $599 (approx Rs 36,000) for a contract-free unit.
As rumoured earlier, the device sports a 5-inch AMOLED display with 1080p resolution. Under the hood, it is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, which is highly speculated to be Snapdragon 800. It also includes 2GB of RAM. The 13-megapixel snapper sits on the rear side of the device, and it also gets a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.
The Ativ SE comes equipped with 16GB onboard storage that can be expanded further with a microSD card slot. The maximum expandable memory is not specified. The device supports 4G LTE network. All of this is fuelled by a 2,600mAh battery.
Samsung has also loaded the device with some premium apps. The WatchON app lets users interact with a compatible TV – start a movie on the smartphone and continue it on an HDTV. It also supports personalised show recommendations and more. Samsung Link lets users share content across multiple devices. Users can also crop photos and add special effects with the intuitive Photo Editor. ATIV Beam app helps share content with NFC-enabled Android devices.
India is one of Samsung’s important markets and we may expect the device to reach Indian shores too. Last year, Indian site Zauba.com had listed an unnamed 5-inch Samsung smartphone running Windows 8 for Rs 33,245. The site reportedly said that the phones were sent for testing, evaluation and R&D purposes.
