The invites are in. Samsung will be officially launching the successor to the wildly-popular Galaxy Grand in India today. Fittingly, the Galaxy Grand 2 gets a big bump up in terms of specifications and is likely to be even more of a success than its predecessor.
The launch will take place in Mumbai, and we will be on the spot covering the event. There is no word on the pricing, but we expect it to be priced around the Rs 22,000 mark with an MOP of around Rs 20,000. You can catch the live webcast of the event here. The phone will likely be sold in white, pink and black colours.
Grand 2 is on its way
The Grand 2 gets a 720p display as opposed to the low-res non-HD panel on the earlier model. It has a slightly larger panel too; 5.25 inches as opposed to the 5-inch Grand. The large display can be used to operate more than one app at a time thanks to Samsung's Multi Window feature.
Just like the Grand, there’s an 8-megapixel camera on the back with an accompanying LED flash. On the front, there’s a 1.9-megapixel shooter. The chipset has also seen an upgrade; the Galaxy Grand 2 is powered by an as-yet-unspecified quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2GHz and there's a healthy 1.5GB of RAM on board, which should be more than enough to run Android 4.3 with Samsung’s own TouchWiz on top. At the moment, there’s no indication of whether Samsung will release an Android KitKat build for the Grand 2.
Here’s a quick look at its key specifications:
- 5.25-inch HD display with 1280×720 pixel resolution
- HSPA+, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n
- Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with with A-GPS support and GLONASS
- 8 megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and LED flash, 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera
- 8GB onboard storage, expandable upto 64GB via microSd card slot
Samsung has managed to cram in a 2,600mAh battery that sounds like plenty given the specifications. The company has rated the phone for up to 10 hours of music playback and 17 hours of talk time. We will find out all about the phone’s other features at the event today, so stay tuned for the whole coverage on tech2.
