Two months ago, twenty-six year old Dallas Wiens underwent hours of surgery to become the first man in the United States to receive a full face transplant.

The surgery, which took place at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts, included over 30 medical professionals and went on for 15 hours to give Mr. Wiens a new nose, forehead, lips, facial skin and a nasal structure. The medical team also transplanted underlying muscles and nerves that would allow Mr. Wiens to feel and allow movement of his face. He has even regained the ability to grow facial hair.

The reason for the transplant was an accident which occurred back in November 2008, where Mr. Wiens' head got too close to a high-voltage power line resulting in massive burns to his face. For three months, doctors kept him in a medically induced coma and performed multiple surgeries just to help him survive. In a press conference, Mr. Weins said that he is indebted to the team of doctors who gave him a new face as well the donor's family. His daughter commented on his new face saying, 'Daddy, you're so handsome”.

This isn’t the first time someone a received a complete face transplant. In April 2010, a patient identified only as ‘Oscar’ was the world’s first patient to get a full-face transplant. The procedure took place in Spain. For pictures (not for the faint of heart) and the press conference, click here.
