It was initially believed that LG would be manufacturing the displays for the upcoming iPad 3 and these displays would feature Retina Display, the same pixel density found on the iPhone. As of recently, LG along with Samsung were the panel manufacturers set to produce the displays for the upcoming Apple tablet that could be announced by the first quarter of next year. However, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, it appears that Apple has also added Sharp as one of their suppliers for these LCD displays.
The iPad 3 rumours coming thick and fast
The report states that their sources have informed them that, “Apple's next iPad is expected to launch next year, and Sharp's Kameyama No. 2 plant in central Japan will manufacture LCD panels for the device.” The same source goes on to say, “Apple is also investing in facilities at Sharp's panel manufacturing factories in Japan, without specifying the amount being invested, highlighting Apple's plans to work with multiple component makers to ensure that it can secure enough parts to make its popular iPhones and iPads.”
Sharp also manufactures LCD displays for televisions, so if rumours about Apple’s HDTV are true, Sharp could be one of the suppliers of these television panels as well.
