Apple may be planning to expand the possibilities of Siri. The tech giant has recently posted a job listing, which states that it is looking for people fluent in Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Korean, Norwegian, and Swedish. Siri is currently available in a host of languages. However, some of the languages mentioned here are not known to Siri yet. Hiring executives skilled in these languages may be a way of expanding Siri’s capabilities.
With this move, it appears that the Apple senior vice president of Internet and services, Eddie Cue, who is now handling Siri, is moving in the right direction with this voice recognition service.
Apart from adding additional languages, it appears that Apple intends to refine Siri’s capabilities in the languages it currently knows. The job description requires the candidate to be fluent in some languages it already supports.
Siri may learn some new languages
As far as the job description is concerned, Apple states, “The environment is fast paced, requiring the ability to work autonomously and manage to aggressive delivery schedules. In addition to project work, the ideal candidates will also be on the lookout for ways to automate and improve the localization process. Attention to detail and proven ability to manage priorities are essential.”
The Cupertino-based company states that suitable candidates should have the right mix of technical organisational, and communication skills. Fluency in at least one language other than English is required. Apple adds that experience with Mac OS X is highly desirable. This indicates that the next major OS for the Mac, OS X 10.9, may feature Siri.
Apart from the knowledge of these languages, applicants is also required to possess experience in developing a website, using Ruby on Rails or similar technologies, as well as have experience in developing software for Mac OS X and/ or Microsoft Windows.
According to a report by 9to5Mac, sources have informed it that Siri is integrated into early builds of the OS X 10.9, like the new iPad models running iOS 6. It is uncertain yet if Siri will be available for all users when OS X 10.9 is officially released. As of now, Siri is available on only a handful of devices such as the newer iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch models. Hence, Apple may decide to limit its availability on Macs.
At the iPhone 5 announcement, Apple stated that Siri had also been updated and new features include support for more languages, easy access to sports scores, restaurant recommendations, and movie listings; Siri and Facebook-enabled apps such as Photos, Safari, and Maps; and Shared Photo Streams via iCloud. However, a majority of these features are not yet available in India and hopefully over the course of some time, Siri in India will be as good as Siri overseas.
