A couple of days ago, while addressing the Indian Science Congress in Bhubaneswar, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh declared 2012-13 as the ‘Year of Science in India’ and emphasized the need to nurture and develop the scientific talent in our country. With IIT Bombay’s Techfest having already set the ball rolling, it’s now time for Vigyan Yagnya.
Vigyaan Yagna at Somaiya Vidyavihar
To be hosted by Somaiya Vidyavihar, Vigyan Yagnya will be held form 27th to 29th January 2012. Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Vijay Joshi, Principal of K.J. Somaiya College of Science and Commerce said, “While applied science is hugely popular amongst youngsters the same is not the case with pure science. With Vigyan Yagnya we hope to rekindle the interest in science and attract young minds who increasingly are lured towards fields like engineering, MBBS, MBA, etc. We want to be able to show that science can be fun and at the same time you can earn on par with the rest.”
Alongside the fair they have lined up various activities like guest lectures by eminent scientists, Science expo featuring work of premier research institutes in India, ‘Thunda’ demonstrating use of liquid nitrogen, high powered telescopes for sky gazing, and much more. Entries are invited for four categories for school students at Junior level, then Intermediate category for junior college, Senior category for under graduates and graduate science students and fourthly Engineering Category for undergraduate Engineering and Polytechnic students.
The last day for submission is 15th January 2012, the entries will be then scanned then shortlisted by a panel and 100 projects from each category will be displayed. Winners from each category will be awarded cash prize of one lakh each.
