Remember when we told you that there would be a Sony press event today and that they were very likely to launch the successor to the PlayStation Portable? Well, that has just come true and every feature the PSP2 was rumoured to have, the Next Generation Portable does indeed have it and much more.
The PSP2, codenamed the Next Generation Portable (NGP) for now, features a 5-inch OLED touchscreen that features a resolution that's “4x the current PSP resolution”, 3G and Wi-fi connectivity, a new flash-based form of storage media, two micro analog sticks (not nubs), six access controls (sixaxis maybe), front and rear cameras and a touch pad at the back.
According to Kaz Hirai, Sony Gaming Chief and Shuhei Yoshida, the NGP launch titles will include Hotshots Golf, Killzone (!), Little Big Planet, WipeOut, Resistance and here's the big one folks – Uncharted. When the device was shown off with Uncharted running on it, Yoshida used the touchpad to control the character and an in-built gyro sensor to make Nathan Drake jump! He slid his fingers on the touchpad on the back and Nate slid down the wine he was on. Other forms of controls include touching places and Nate jumping to them or drawing lines to make the characters move.
Sony has just blown minds with this announcement. A handheld that is powerful enough to run Uncharted and a device that is loaded to the brim and more with features. The NGP will be available come Holiday Season 2011 (!) and we simply cannot wait to get our hands on it. Pricing details haven't been revealed yet, but rest assured we'll bring them to you once it comes out.
