If you've been wondering what Supergiant Games has been up to since it released Bastion two years ago, you're in for a treat. The company has announced its next game, dubbed Transistor, with a trailer. The trailer shows that the gameplay style will be largely unchanged from Bastion, and if the older game is anything to go by, this one will have a kickass soundtrack too. As of yet, it is unknown if Transistor will have a narrator like Bastion did. Check out the trailer below:
Transistor is set in a sci-fi world. The story goes: Everyone has a voice in Cloudbank. Now, the city's most influential voices are vanishing one by one, and it's Red's turn. Players assume the role of a young woman who gains control of a powerful weapon after a mysterious group of assailants nearly kills her with it. Now she must fight from street to street against forces that will stop at nothing to recover the weapon. During the course of the adventure, players will piece together the Transistor's mysteries as they pursue its former owners.
The game is slated for launch in early 2014, but as of yet, there is no information what platforms the game will be released on. Going by the release window, it would be a safe bet to assume that the game will be out on next-gen systems.
Maybe if we wish really hard, the narrator will be in this game too
The previous game by Supergiant Games, Bastion, has been critically praised for its story, storytelling method, and music. The game employs a narrator that tells the story as it happens, including things that the player does, like breaking boxes and falling off ledges. The hack-and-slash RPG was originally launched on Xbox Live Arcade as a Summer of Arcade title in 2011. Other than iOS and the Xbox 360, you can play the game on PC, Mac and via the Chrome browser.
In Bastion, the world has been torn to pieces by an event referred to only as “the Calamity”. The nameless and voiceless main character, known only as “The Kid”, reaches the Bastion, which is supposed to be a gathering place in case of emergencies. He learns that the Bastion can turn things back to normal if he can find the Bastion's cores to power it.
The story is told by a narrator who is telling The Kid's story. The narrator was a revolutionary thing at the time, especially because he would sometimes comment on how you played the game. Break too many boxes in a level and he would say “The kid just let off some steam.”
