Telltale Games, one of the few if not the only company that has gotten episodic gaming right, has recently been working on an episodic adaptation of The Walking Dead. The first two episodes are out on the PC, Mac, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. The game has been praised by critics for having a good story with great characters and strong writing.
The first episode of the series, titled “A New Day”, will be releasing on July 26 for iOS devices with a price tag of $4.99. The other episodes in the series will be periodically released for the iOS just like they have been for the other platforms, priced at $4.99. Unfortunately, older devices won’t be able to play the game. iOS devices which can play the game are iPad 2, the new iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and 4th Generation iPods and above.
The game has been optimized for touchscreen devices, adding in touch controls along with full control of the protagonist Lee and his interaction with the game’s environments, such as investigating objects.
Lee Everett blocking zombies from entering the room
Players who have read the graphic novel or seen the TV show will meet familiar characters such as Glenn in the game. There are also new characters who can live or die depending on the choices the player makes in each episode.
Future episodes of the game can be purchased through the Walking Dead app, or users can buy a pack that will include episodes two through five at a 25 percent discount.
The main story of the Walking Dead universe is that zombies have overrun most of America and a rag tag bunch of survivors must do whatever it takes to survive. The comics tread a very dark path by highlighting some truly unspeakable acts performed by the humans, as opposed to the zombies. Though the game’s tone isn’t quite that dark, there are still glimpses of it in the first episode.
The player plays the role of Lee Everett, a seemingly normal guy who hides a dark secret. On route to the police station, the police car he’s in gets wrecked by a couple of lumbering corpses and so begins his journey as well as a new lease on life. He soon encounters a little girl, takes her under his protective wing and heads out to meet other survivors. The girl, Clementine is a well mannered, scared little girl who’s just trying to wrap her little mind around all this madness.
