One of the most popular mobile games, Temple Run, is getting a sequel. Temple Run 2 is available for free on iTunes for the iPhone and iPad. The sequel seems to be building upon the original with new gameplay mechanics like the inclusion of the zipline, mine carts and a new power meter.

Imangi Studio co-founder Keith Shepherd said that the game is more of what fans loved, but with a depth that his team wasn't able to add in the first game. “We wanted to set out and do all the things we wanted to do with Temple Run but we couldn't fit in,” Shepherd says. “It feels like a bigger, better, more awesome version of the first game.”

The level design is also set to be much more aesthetically pleasing this time around. The game will take place in a floating temple in the clouds. “The world you're running in is much more rich and vibrant,” Shepherd says. “There are curves and hills and valleys and stairs.”

There will be more things to unlock this time, such as new characters that have their own specialised powers. “Our fans have been fantastic and have given us great ideas and feedback,” Shepherd says. “People always wanted more out of the game. It was so easy to unlock everything, so we're glad we can offer a lot more for this one.”

The previous game in the series was Temple Run: Brave – a licensed game adapted from the movie Brave. You take control of Merida, the main protagonist – helping her run, slide, jump, turn and shoot your way across the wilds of Scotland. The app is now available on the Play store for Rs. 55. If you loved the original Temple Run, this version should add some variety to the gameplay.

Imangi has added some new features to the game to make it more interesting. Instead of just swiping up, down, left and right, you can now shoot targets for bonus points with your bow and arrow. You simply tap the targets to shoot a bull’s eye and earn extra points. Instead of the gloomy swamp backdrop in the original, gamers are now treated to a visually stunning forest with added effects like sun rays and foliage. There are different types of environments as well, all inspired by the movie.

The 32MB app is compatible with most handsets with Android 2.1 and above. When Temple Run first launched on Android, there were a few bugs as well – the game would crash after a few retries. This happened on phones running Ice Cream Sandwich, but was later fixed in an update. If you download the game now, you  also get a bonus 2500 coins that can be used for power-ups and levelling up your character.
