TomTom has released a new navigation app for Android devices. Though TomTom is one of the most well known providers of maps for different SatNav services, the app that the company has released for Android feels rather incomplete, mostly because of the lack of support for devices that have a resolution of more than 854 x 480.
One of the main features of the app is that it’s an offline navigation app. It helps keep data costs in control as you don’t need to be connected to the Internet to be able to use the navigation functionality efficiently. You simply have to download the offline map files through Wi-Fi, and then you’ll be good to go for navigation in low data signal areas.

TomTom has made the navigation service available in many countries, including Australia, Brazil, Southern Africa, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, Russia-Baltics-Finland, New Zealand, Western Europe, and US and Canada. All the different versions of the Navigation service come at a hefty price tag, ranging between Rs 2,000 and Rs 3,000, depending on the area you choose to download the maps for.
Some of the features of TomTom’s navigation service are 2D/ 3D driving view, clear voice instructions, fast route recalculation, multi-stop routes, Eco Routes, Navigate To Contacts, Search TomTom Places and POIs, automatic music fading, automatic day and night mode, Car Symbols, and Map Colours. One of the basic requirements for downloading the app is at least 320MB of free space on the phone. The size of the maps to be downloaded for offline use is a whopping 4GB.
TomTom seems to want to pose competition to Google’s own Navigation service on the Android, which the search giant had launched in India back in September. Google Maps Navigation takes advantage of long-standing features of Google Maps for mobile. These features include powerful Google search and voice search capabilities, which allow users to find local destinations by typing or speaking an address or business name. Voice search on Google Maps Navigation, at the moment is only available in English. Google’s search tools go a distance in assisting the user. For instance, ambiguous queries and words that are misspelled are corrected and clarified without requiring the user to enter an exact address, and the optimal route from origin to destination is quickly calculated.
Google Maps Navigation, an Internet-connected GPS navigation system, offers users turn-by-turn voice-guided driving directions and it has been a free feature of Google Maps for mobile on smartphones running Android version 2.2 or later. As part of the Google Maps for mobile application, Google Maps Navigation accesses the latest information about roads and points of interest from Google’s online mapping services automatically, without the need for any manual data updates.
TomTom’s apps for its navigation services can be downloaded from the Google Play store.
