Tumblr has revamped its iOS app to version 3.3 with a new update that adds a whole bunch of new features including a redesigned camera interface and integrated photoset capabilities.

The update does not change too much with the visual feel of the application nor changes much with the overall functioning of it. The changes are mainly feature-based for Tumblr’s iOS app. Mainly all new features have been added in order to aid better user experience with images on the site.

The most important of all the new features is the redesigned camera app. Tumblr’s new camera for iPhone and iPod touch has new buttons for toggling between front and rear cameras, setting the flash function and switching grid view on and off. The iPad app, of course, has no buttons for flash settings.

The refreshed app also provides for a new scrollable view of your library. This easy new view will help you select multiple images from the view itself so you can add it to your post. This will end up making photosets right from your profile.

Only last year in October, Tumblr had released a standalone app called Photosets for iOS users to piece together photos as a collection and share it with family and friends. This ability has now been added to the Tumblr app itself so you need not use the desktop site or the Photosets app to do so.

Tumblr has gone slightly the Instagram way with this update. You can now simply double tap on the images quite like Instagram to “heart” them. Changing avatars has also become easy with a single tap.

Finally, Tumblr for iOS will fetch the title for you once you copy or enter a URL, making sharing and using linked posts easier.

Tumblr has been going all out to make user experience easier and more fun even as it stares in the face of competition from the likes of Instagram and Pinterest, both image heavy sites. In February, the blogging site added a new Facebook-esque feature that put up real-time notifications on your dashboards. Thanks to this new addition, you now have more interesting images come up on your feeds without having to refresh the page over and over.

Post this update, you can now see updates from all the blogs and people you follow on Tumblr in real time on your dashboard, almost like the Facebook ticker. The staff flaunted the new feature on their blog as a GIF file to show what the updates will look like.

The post accompanying the GIF read: “Check this out! We’re testing real-time notifications from people you follow. You should start to see them in the next few hours (and can toggle them on your Settings page). Enjoy!”
The demo currently shows only posts of people who have commented, liked or reblogged your posts, but it does look like it will be more integrated over time as Tumblr goes about making it an important feature on the site.
