Is IPL trending in Ranchi, or is Surat talking about Narendra Modi? You will now be able to know about exactly what cities other than the metropolitan ones in India are talking about on Twitter. The micro-blogging site has launched Trends in seven new Indian cities today, bringing the count of Indian cities covered by Twitter Trends up to 21.

Twitter rolled out Trends for over 160 cities across the world today. Along with seven new locations in India, countries like Belgium, Greece, Kenya, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Ukraine got trends for the first time thanks to this update.

Amritsar, Rajkot, Srinagar and Ranchi are some of the new Indian cities that are going to get tailored trends now. Funnily enough, Thane, considered to be Mumbai’s satellite city, has been displayed as a whole different city on Twitter! What next, Navi Mumbai or Noida?

“Trends are an easy way to find out what people are talking about right now –– around the world, in your country, or in your city. By checking out Trends, you can easily find breaking news and current hot topics that are most relevant to you,” wrote Twitter on the blog, announcing the addition of Trends to 160 cities worldwide. You can go through the locations listed for your country by clicking on “Change” on the trends sidebar on Twitter’s website.

Formerly known as “Trending Topics”, this feature has become a very useful one for Twitter users in the recent times. With localised information, Twitter Trends have come to the rescue of many during times of emergency and natural disasters. Topics and hashtags pertaining to local incidents are almost always trending and Twitter is trying to expand on this experience.

The last time Twitter added cities to Trends in India was back in December last year. You could choose between 14 Indian cities, Including Kanpur, Indore, Jaipur and Hyderabad, on Twitter and view trending topics in them back then. Metropolitan Indian cities New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata were already having a separate tab for Trends soon after they were launched worldwide.

Twitter also has a feature called “Tailored Trends” that considers your location as well as the people you follow to show you trends that are quite literally made especially for you. A set of algorithms work considering the location and follower factor to show you tailored trends on web as well as on the mobile web, iOS and Android apps.

The more Twitter expands on the cities it shows Trends to, the more it can expand sponsored trends. Sponsored trends and tweets is how Twitter is monetising the website. Once in a while, a sponsored tweet will show up on your timeline and the sponsored trend on top of the trends chart. The sponsored stories on Twitter look discrete and almost never interfere with your work as compared to ads on other social networking websites.
