Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical, the company behind the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu has announced on his blog that the next build of the distribution 11.10, would be called Oneiric Ocelot. The immediate next release called Natty Narwhal (11.04) is expected to release sometime in April this year.
Ubuntu 11.10 arrives in October
Shuttleworth has made it clear that it would be wrong to expect anything major in the 11.10 build, instead, the Natty Narwhal build would contain most of the improvements. Natty Narwhal will include the Unity interface which first debuted on netbook versions of Ubuntu. Unity has been designed keeping in mind the important of workspace on the desktop. GNOME will also be available as an addon when Oneiric Ocelot comes out, but for now, the user of Unity interface will be one of the key changes in 11.04. Work and planning for the subsequent build has already begun. Although, a codename has not yet been assigned, it’s going to be a LTS (Long Term Support) build. When Oneiric comes comes out, it will include a 2D version of the Unity framework that is designed specifically lower end system configurations.
