UPDATE: Despite Hef's tweets, Apple's shot down any notion of an uncensored Playboy on the iPad, adhering to its no-nudity policy for apps. Playboy users will have to see the full frontal online, via archives on a web app. This will be iPad compatible and will utilize iPad functions. Let's see how this works out shall we? There will also be a native app, but it will have censored versions of the magazines.
According to a tweet by Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, Digital versions of Playboy will be available for iOS devices in the month of March 2011. He also confirmed that they will be uncensored.
This is quite a deal for Playboy as Steve Jobs has been very vocal about not having pornography on the iOS platform. While a Playboy app is available for the iOS devices, it does not contain frontal nudity and is web-based which means it doesn’t require it to go through Apple’s review process
For those interested (hehe), this means users will be able to get issues which go back all the way to the 1950s right up to the latest issue on the stands. What we are wondering is how Playboy managed to pull it off and what excuses we need to come up with when someone asks about the app on our iPads.
