The Vatican opened up its news portal today, www.news.va. This move marks the 60th anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI's ordination into priesthood. The site is a portal for all Vatican related news, as well as other media like videos, livestreams from papal events, and audio feeds from the Vatican Radio. The story is that the Pope launched the portal with a tap on an iPad. The site is currently available in English and Italian with other languages to come soon. The Church already has a main Vatican site, which Pope John Paul II launched in 1995.
The Pope doth tweet
Which brings us to the Pope tweeting. He's tweeted from the Vatican news account, with Twitter for iPad. So either the Pope has an iPad or he was presented with one to hit “Tweet”. The tweet is about the launch of the news site. This Pope does seem to really want to get into internet and new media to reach out to followers. He's overseen the Vatican's YouTube channel, as well as mobile and Facebook apps entitled, “Pope2You“, and he's also encouraged priests to blog.
