Vodafone has introduced its new innovative plug and play keyboard called Webbox which uses standard composite RCA connectors to enable internet connectivity for TVs. While it may look like a standard QWERTY keyboard, it’s actually a data device running Android 2.1 Eclair and has an antenna which supports EDGE and 2.5G networks.

Connecting to the TV brings up a unique UI that allows users to surf the internet without any installations or further set-up. However, to maintain exclusivity, users need to insert a Vodafone SIM card into the keyboard. Other pre-installed features include Opera Mini 5.1, Apps, Games, Email, SMS, Audio, Video and FM Radio.Vodafone Webbox

At present, Webbox is available in Ambala, Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra and Sonipat. It will soon be available to customers in other cities in Haryana and will be priced at Rs. 5,799.00. The offer includes a 2GB SD Card, and 12 GB data usage valid for a period of 6 months. Vodafone also plans to make it available on a 24 month contract and are expected to launch the product all over India soon.

It’s doubtful that the Webbox will have Android Market connectivity, inspite of it running Android. Also, there is no support for HDMI or 3G networks. Whether it will be a hit or a miss in the Indian market, only time will tell.
