WhastApp announced a new feather in its cap with a record-breaking usage. The company quickly sent out a tweet from its official Twitter account stating that it processed 64 billion messages in a single day. This means, the messaging surpassed its previous record high of 54 billion on the past New Year ’s Eve.
Here’s what the tweet said:
new daily record: 20B messages sent (inbound) and 44B messages received (outbound) by our users = 64B messages handled in just 24 hours.

However, the news was soon overshadowed by an outage that the app suffered on multiple platforms. Several iOS, Android and Windows Phone users were complaining about the messaging app being very slow or not working at all. DownDetector.com that monitors Web outages revealed that the problem began around 8:34 a.m. ET Wednesday. However, looks like, not everyone suffered from the outage and was limited to specific regions.
According to TechCrunch, some users have reported seeing a message that reads “Sorry, our service is experiencing a problem right now. We are working on it and hope to restore the functionality shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
It was the second outage since Facebook acquired WhatsApp for a whopping $19 billion last month. WhatsApp founder Jan Koum has soon issued an apology and blamed a network router for Saturday’s outage of the mobile messaging app.
