Yahoo pips Google in US web traffic for first time in 2 years

Marissa Mayer seems to be achieving the impossible for Yahoo as the latest monthly results from ComScore show that Yahoo sites edged Google’s in the US in terms of web traffic.

According to ComScore Yahoo! Sites had 196,564,000 unique visitors edged Google sites which had192,251,000 unique visitors.

This is the first time in 2 years that Google is not number one when it comes to US Internet traffic. The last time Yahoo was number one was May of 2011 as this report on MarketingLand points out.

The report also says that ComScore has not combined the figures of Yahoo and Tumblr. ComScore told MarketingLand:Tumblr is not currently included in the Yahoo! Sites roll-up. Seems there are other factors at play, and given how close Yahoo Sites and Google have been in recent months it can likely just be normal seasonal/month-to-month fluctuations.

For Yahoo this news should come as a major boost and probably shows that CEO Marissa Mayer’s strategies are working for now.

The company redesigned Yahoo! Search for desktop and mobile, relaunched Flickr with filters and 1TB space for users.

Yahoo will also unveil a new logo on 4 September.

Mayer has also emphasised on mobile and the company revamped its Flickr app for Android and iOS, along with Yahoo Weather app and Yahoo Mail app.

Under her leadership the company made 17 acquisitions, most notably Tumblr (for $990 million, according to this Forbes report) and popular news-aggregating app Summly for $30 million.

She’s also focussing on video and told Reuters that “It’s clear to me that our video business is something that’s growing a lot. It’s something that we’d like to accelerate.”
